Geek Blog – What Teachers Make

GeekWife is wrapping up her “Week alone with the class” portion of her student teaching.  I’m very proud of her; she’s only told me of a couple of students who ended up crying.  All kidding aside, she puts in a lot of work in the off hours to finish her college education and earn her teaching certificate and I’m frankly amazed at her perseverance.  A co-worker sent me a link to this video and I thought it would be great to share.  You might recognize him from his performance of “Speak with Authority.”

Taylor Mali has many great poetic performances and would have been my favorite English Teacher!

To the GeekWife: I love you, you’re doing great!

Geek Blog – Blizzard Announces New WoW Expansion

The Mists of Pandaria!

Pandaren Monks have been a humorous inside joke in the Warcraft universe for quite sometime; made more real as a non-combat pet you can purchase from Blizzard’s online store; and now a playable Race/Class in the just announced expansion trailer.

In addition to a new class, race and starting zone, WoW players will get a level-cap increase (to 90), a new continent, Challenge-Mode dungeons, PVE scenarios and a pet combat system (WTF?).

As a player since day 01, I hope this can offer some competition to the impending SWTOR competition.

Geek Blog – SpoCon 2011

August 12, 13 and 14 of 2011 was the Annual SpoCon: Spokane, Washington’s geek-fest.  The GeekWife and I took a mini-vacation away from the LittleGeeks for some play of our own.

SpoCon2011

We might have disrupted a Space/Time Continuum or two....

I was out of town for work Friday, so we didn’t start our escapade until early Saturday afternoon.  I’ll admit, this was my first Con, so I was a tad anxious.  The Con offered many choices for entertainment and education.  Workshops for CosPlayers, LAN Gaming, Board Gaming, writers’ workshops, a Masquerade and Rave as well as an Art Show/Auction – options, options!

We arrived at Spokane’s DoubleTree hotel sometime after lunch and as we navigated the crowds toward the front desk for checkin, we were greeted by a young man in full Ultramarine Power Armor!  Farther down the hall sat Boushh, presumably enjoying a short break in the tides.  After check-in, GeekWife and I hurried to our room at the 11th floor and quickly changed into our Con garb.  Geekwife had created an excellent corset by weaving together a ton of WoW cards (doubles of doubles, and alliance to boot, she assures me).  I donned my favorite costume: the Jedi Robes.  We then promptly headed back downstairs to see what it was all about.

365 Challenge – Day 023

“Get over here!” just doesn’t do this image justice.

365Challenge

"Come here!"

Whenever I get fancy bookends, I struggle to decide what goes between them.  Do I take the Sword of Truth series from the shelf?  The Star Trek hardcovers?  Shannara?  Deathstalker?  Graphic novels or RPG manuals?  The list goes on.  I figure my Tolkien collection deserves a special spot, but why stop with just one copy?  You can tell I love these works by the state of the books.  In that stack shown above, are the paperbacks my father handed down to me when I was just eight – I’ve read them every summer since.  The only ones missing are my collection of Tolkien’s letters and his translation of “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” – which is on a different shelf, dedicated to medieval poetry.

I’ll admit, I have yet to read “The Return of the Shadow” or “The Treason of Isengard” — the summer is young yet.

*Bonus points if you identified the Lego minifig as Raistlin Majere, after he switched to the black.

365 Challenge – Day 019

MC Escher would be proud.  Trying to emulate his “Hand with Reflecting Sphere” self-portrait, but with a slight twist.  My sphere, rather than reflecting the light of the room, refracted it, showing an upside-down representation of my cubicle.

365 Challenge – Day 017 “Imzadi”

365Challenge

"Imzadi"

Day 017, aside from being one of my five lucky numbers, is dedicated to my GeekWife, the Imzadi in my life.  Imzadi is a Betazoid term describing the spiritual, physical and mental connection one has for their first True Love.  My wedding band creates the heart-shaped shadow in the spine of the novel, and you can almost read its inscription “You are my World”.

I love you, GeekWife.

Geek Blog – Words Hurt

Words of advice to “keep our future janitors and sports reporters in school just long enough so they don’t become a burden on our tax system.”  Don’t be a GeekBully

Words Hurt, so bite your tongues, fellow geeks.  Just once a day.
