Geek Blog – Happy Holidays!

GeekWife just informed me that I’m slacking a little on my posts.  “Y U no post New Year yet?” she asks.

Truth is, Star Wars: The Old Republic happened.

On a related note: Happy New Year!

Happy Holidays, From the Vadergrifts

365 Challenge – Day 017 “Imzadi”

365Challenge

"Imzadi"

Day 017, aside from being one of my five lucky numbers, is dedicated to my GeekWife, the Imzadi in my life.  Imzadi is a Betazoid term describing the spiritual, physical and mental connection one has for their first True Love.  My wedding band creates the heart-shaped shadow in the spine of the novel, and you can almost read its inscription “You are my World”.

I love you, GeekWife.

365 Challenge – Days 2, 3 and 4

I realized quickly during Independence Day Weekend that I’ll not be able to post a pic every day.  I’m still ensuring that I take a picture each day, but not necessarily post them that same day.  Many websites that outline this challenge suggest uploading at a minimum of once per week, if only to minimize any building overhead to stave off feeling overwhelmed by it all.  Additionally, I doubt all of my daily pictures will be geeky (although I’ll try), so I’ll not bore my audience with posts flowers, clouds etc.  You can still see links to all of the pictures as they come out here (this site) or here (Photobucket).

Without further ado, here’s Day 002, with the others after the jump.

Day 002 - "Naturally"

I dug out my most beat-up D20 for this shot, taken on a WoW:TCGj playmat, just before an epic game of Magic with GeekWife.

Geek Blog – Top Father’s Day Gift

From my list anyway.  Not necessarily THE top father’s day gift I could receive; April 19th is my GeekPrincess’s birthday – THAT tops the list.  This year, she turns one and does so on Father’s Day.  Last year, she surprised us the day before GeekWife and I were planning on attending Star Wars in Concert (I had to give the tickets to a very gracious co-worker).

It seems fitting that this series of events that culminate on Father’s Day would loosely parallel Nintendo’s latest ad for their soon to be released flagship: Ocarina of Time for the 3DS.

Side Note: TIL Robin Williams named his daughter after damsel in distress from the golden cartridge.

Geek Blog – Pegg and Frost Do Star Wars

While filming their new Sci-Fi comedy, Paul, UK Comedic Geniuses Simon Pegg and Nick Frost set out to recreate Star Wars; however, they didn’t make it too far.  This comedic duo portray the beloved droids well, having almost as deep a history together (Shaun of the Dead, Spaced, Hot Fuzz, etc) as Artoo and Threepio.  I’m still laughing.

I absolutely love their stuff and can’t wait to see Paul in theatres.

Geek Blog – First Love

I recently acquired a friend’s NES and about a metric crapload of cartridges.  He was moving, the price was right (even if some of the pins are bent and I really should replace the receptors).  When I was 11, I was forced to sell my beloved system in order to come up with the last little bit of cash to purchase a SNES (I had saved my allowance all summer).  I fondly remember those early morning Mario runs before school, the late night Zelda sessions with my Mom, sharing codes and cheats with my friends.

From 1991 until summer of 2010, my only feelings of nostalgia were gained from ROMs and emulators found on the internet, from DLC on the Wii Virtual Console, or re-releases for the GameBoy Advance (Played on my Gen1 DS).

But then.  OMG but then!  Feeling the square corners of the controller as they bit into my palm; sighing in frustration as I was forced to re-insert the cartridge time and time again to make the connection just right (I really should replace those pins).  It immediately, and with great force, thrust me back into my childhood.  That afternoon all those games and peripherals (finally, a PowerGlove: I’m so BAD) arrived, I disappeared into the past.

That feeling faded as I dreamed of 8bit princesses, octoroks and tetrominoes, waking up the next day, albeit an adult again, but a slightly happier one.  Now I boot her up and blow out the carts for the LittleGeek, who has, surprisingly enough, at the age of 3 already beaten World 1-1 in Super Mario Bros. – on the console it was meant to be played.

So I can relate to the teary-eyed reunion that YT user wageman1 presents in this touching short video.  Now if only we could figure out how to get the Zapper and R.O.B. to work on new flatscreen TVs – I’m not that keen on keeping a CRT around forever.

NES, you’ll always be my first.

Geek Blog – This Might Be the Christmas Special You’re Looking For

Frustrated that Lucas has buried the now iconic Star Wars Christmas Special so deep that even finding a copy on IRC is difficult, the creative genius at GamerVision have crafted their own version, using shots from the original trilogy.

Happy Holidays and May the Force Be With You

Geek Blog – How Episode 5 Should Have Ended

It’s no secret that Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back is my favorite of the original Star Wars saga.  The amazingly hilarious site HowItShouldHaveEnded has posted their take on the classic middle child.

I won’t get technical, but there has to be a logical reason why Vader never pulled that move during the climax: I mean, he was using the force to toss about all sorts mechanical equipment in the bowels of Cloud City.  Did he forget the adage drilled into us by Yoda mere minutes earlier: “size matters not.”?

I totally Lol’d at Vader’s excitement finding out he was a father: I can relate to that.
