Geek Blog – Captain Picard Day!

Listed among the ranks of geek holidays like International Talk Like a Pirate Day (arrgh! on September 19), Pi Day (March 14), and Tolkein Reading Day (March 25), today is Captain Picard Day!

Mentioned in the beginning of the episode “The Pegasus,” Captain Picard Day is a day celebrated by the schoolchildren onboard the Enterprise by holding a contest for creating the best likeness of Picard with clay, paint and crayons.  Most Trekkers agree that stardate 47457.1 falls on June 16 and celebrate by watching copious episodes of TNG and playing Star Trek Bingo (refresh the page for a new random card).

On a geek tangent, some trivia regarding this episode:

  • Terry O’Quinn, who played Admiral Pressman went on to play John Locke in Lost.
  • The final episode of Enterprise, “These are the Voyages….” occurs during the episode “The Pegasus”
  • “The Pegasus” was directed by Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton)
  • Other dates considered by Trekkers to be Captain Picard Day are: November 4, January 8 and January 10.
  • Additional activities to celebrate this holiday
